The Episcopal Church
The Episcopal Church is a member of the worldwide Anglican Communion, with 70 million members in 163 countries. We are a community of Christians bound together by our belief that Holy Scripture contains the very core of all Christian faith. Through the many ancient, as well as modern, stories that connect us to Jesus and his teachings, we discover daily God's hope and call to us in our life together.
St. Stephen's
St.
Stephen's is one of about 150 congregations in the Diocese of Los
Angeles. This diocese, like all others in the Episcopal Church,
is headed by a Bishop who is the spiritual leader of the diocese.
The Episcopal Church is the branch of the Worldwide Anglican Communion
in the United States. The Anglican Communion is a global community
of over 70 million persons spiritually aligned with the Church of
England.
St. Stephen's congregation was established and met for the first
time on March 11, 1962. During the next several years various facilities
within the community were used for worship. The original sanctuary,
now Spurling Hall, was completed in April 1967 and was used for
worship until November 1998 when construction was completed on our
current sanctuary.
We are looking forward to continued growth and greater offerings
of programs that this new worship space will allow.
Becoming A Member
Initiation into the Christian faith is accomplished through baptism.
This Episcopal Church recognizes as Christians those who have been
baptized with water in the name of the Trinity. Baptisms are performed
throughout the year.
Confirmation is the public affirmation of one's baptism vows and
the desire to continue in the Christian life through the Episcopal
Church. Confirmation is conferred by the Bishop, usually at an annual
celebration. Both baptism and confirmation require some preparation;
see the Vicar for details.
All people may participate in any of the activities that St. Stephen's
offers even if they are not baptized or confirmed. Naturally, we
hope that everyone's journey with us will result in baptism and
confirmation, but this is in no way intended to exclude anyone from
full participation.
Parish Life
St. Stephen's is an active congregation and offers various opportunities
for spiritual and social activities. Activities include; parish
picnics, men's and women's retreats, camping trips, family hikes,
dinner groups, prayer chains, Bible study, weekday adult study classes,
parents workshops, men's group, women's group (ECW), mature adults
group (Sages), and potluck suppers.
Education
We offer Christian Education for everyone on Sunday mornings
at 9:00 a.m. Through Adult Study, Youth Programs, 4-6 Club (a special
class for 4th through 6th graders), Sunday School, and our Nursery,
we provide age-appropriate classes for everyone.
Youth Activities
We offer a wonderful program called Journey to Adulthood
for teenagers. A series of three, two-year classes are designed
to meet the needs of young people and give them an opportunity to
participate in study, fellowship, and fun while in a loving Christian
community.
Music
There are both adult and children's choirs at St. Stephen's.
The adult choir sings at the 10:00 a.m. Sunday Eucharist and the
other major feast days. The children's choir participate periodically
during the Sunday worship and special events.
